The Monumen Serangan Umum (General offensive) is situated on the corner of Jalan Margo Mulyo and Jalan Panembahan Senopati, in front of and to the side of Fort Vredeburg museum, and commemorates the military offensive that occurred on 1st March 1949 during the Indonesian National Revolution.
On this date the Indonesian army was defeated by Dutch troops in their surprise attempt to retake Yogyakarta. Due to pressure from the United Nations this would ultimately result in a political victory for Indonesia as the Dutch forces were subsequently cleared from the city on 29th June 1949.
The monument itself consists of 5 plinths (might this represent the 5 principles of Pancasila - the official, foundational philosophical theory of Indonesia? Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find any information on the design of the monument so this is pure conjecture on my part - any Indonesian readers provide any background on this?)

On the top of each of these plinths is a separate figure relating to the general offensive.
From what I can see 4 of these figures depict army soldiers/guerilla fighters while the fifth figure - on the far-right pillar - shows a female carrying what appears to be supplies (a basket with a kettle along with a handful of other items - some of which appear to be rocket propelled grenades possibly?)

Situated between 6 - 10 feet behind the 5 plinths/figures is a wall which features a black relief sculpture, displaying scenes depicting events that presumably occurred during the General Offensive, that spans its entire width.
Atop this wall is situated a Javanese style sculpture - with the name of the monument displayed directly underneath. I don’t know what the sculpture was supposed to represent but I’m happy for any knowledgeable readers to supply some background information on the subject!

Unfortunately I couldn’t take photographs directly in front of the monument to capture its full appearance face on due to the presence of multiple rows of seats with a huge performance stage seated directly in front (which I had seen a Pencak Silat display taking place a few days earlier).

All in all though this was an interesting Yogyakartan sight to visit and, as far as I can tell, this appears to be free (if it isn’t then nobody stopped me as I was walking around there!)
Getting there
Situated in the heart of Yogyakarta city centre Monumen Serangan Umum is easily reachable by public transport, car/taxi, motorbike or foot (if you’re already based within 1km of the city centre).
